about

John Brown's Dream is another one of my favorite fiddle tunes. I slowed it down and too some historical license to tell a story of the great abolitionist john Brown and his family as he waited in jail to be hanged for leading the insurrection at Harper's Ferry that became a catalyst for the beginning of the Civil War. I borrowed from some of the letters he wrote his wife, Mary. The guitar tuning is DADGAD for anyone who might wonder.

lyrics

Dearest children, every one, and my beloved Mary
They're building a gallows in Charlestown
I'll die for Harper's Ferry

Saw a slave boy beaten down when I was green and young
A sword of fire went through my soul
To fight for abolition

Mary don't you weep for me let no one see you crying
The peace of God sustains me now
There's much to gain in dying
